Angelina Jolie to Work on Bosnian War Love Story
Movie star Angelina Jolie announced in a surprise visit to Sarajevo that she is going to shoot a romantic film in the Balkans. She will reportedly both act in and direct the film.
The announcement was relayed by the UNCHR, the refugee agency of the United Nations, for whom the actress is serving as a goodwill ambassador.
“Upon leaving Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday, Angelina Jolie stated that she will be in the region working on a film this fall,” the agency said in statement.
The film is said to be a love story set during the Bosnian War during the mid-1990s. It is about “a couple who meet on the eve of the war and the effect the war has on their relationship,” the statement said.
Jolie emphasized that the movie will not have political undertones and that the cast would come from the different ethnic groups of the former Yugoslavia.
The star earlier urged Bosnian leaders to hasten the return of thousands of refugees of the civil war.
“I hope that there’ll soon be practical steps to improve these people’s lives,” the statement quotes Jolie as saying.
The surprise visit comes at the same time her spy film “Salt” is released in Europe, and four months after she and husband Brad Pitt visited the region.
She praised the plan of the Bosnian parliament in June to return all refugees in the country by 2014.
“The political leaders have shown a spirit of compromise in getting this far. Now it needs a little more urgency,” Jolie added.
